DC driving can be unpredictable in the summer. One day you are making quick trips around Rhode Island Avenue NW, Shaw, Bloomingdale, NoMa, or North Capitol Street. The next day you are heading out of the city for a weekend trip and sitting in traffic before you even reach the highway.
A simple emergency kit can make those drives less stressful. It does not need to take up much room. A few basic supplies can help if your battery dies, a tire gets low, or you have to wait for help in the heat.
Jumper cables or a portable jump starter should be near the top of the list. Summer heat can wear down batteries. If your car will not start in a garage, parking lot, or driveway, jumper cables can help. A portable jump starter is even better because you can use it without another car.
Keep water in the vehicle too. A few bottles can help if you are stuck in traffic or waiting for roadside assistance on a hot day. Water can also be useful in some vehicle emergencies, but do not open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.
A flashlight is a must-have. If you need to check a tire, look under the hood, or find something in your trunk after dark, a flashlight is much better than using your phone. Keep extra batteries in the kit so it is ready when needed.
A portable tire inflator can also help. Tire pressure can change during hot weather, and city roads can be rough on tires. If your tire pressure light comes on, an inflator can help you add air until you can get the tire inspected. A tire pressure gauge is also a smart glove box item.
A basic first aid kit belongs in every car. Bandages, wipes, gauze, gloves, and pain reliever can help with small cuts, scrapes, headaches, or other minor issues during your trip.
Do not forget chargers. Keep one in the car and consider carrying a backup power bank. If your phone is your map, your connection to roadside help, and your way to reach family, keeping it charged matters.
Other helpful items include snacks, paper towels, hand sanitizer, gloves, a towel, a small blanket, a rain poncho, and reflective warning triangles. These can help you stay more comfortable and visible if you need to pull over.
Before you leave DC for a longer summer drive, have your car checked. Tires, brakes, fluids, battery, belts, hoses, lights, and air conditioning should all be in good shape before the trip starts.
